February 1, 2005 -- JERUSALEM ó Top Israeli and Palestinian officials held an urgent meeting last night to try to save a fragile truce following terrorist shelling of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad launched mortars and homemade rockets at the Gush Katif settlement bloc during the day in retaliation for what they called Israel´s slaying of a 10-year-old girl.

"We heard talk about a cease-fire. But it seems there is nothing like that on the ground," said the mother of the dead girl, Norhan Deeb.

But Israeli officials said an investigation showed there was a Palestinian wedding in the area and the gunfire that killed Norhan apparently came from celebrants firing in the air.

Last night, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz met with Mohammed Dahlan, the Palestinian security chief in Gaza, to try to end all shelling from Gaza at settlements and Israeli towns. With Post Wire Services (Copyright 2005 NYP Holdings, Inc. 02/01/05)
