Soldiers manning a position at the Netzarim junction in the north- central Gaza Strip killed an unarmed Palestinian on Thursday after he ignored warning shots and raced toward them. IDF medics went to treat the man, but he was already dead. The evacuation of the body was coordinated by the local District Coordinating Office.

Palestinian media reports claimed the man was mentally unstable and criticized the soldiers for shooting him.

The IDF Spokesman said he was in a restricted area when he ignored the soldiers´ calls to halt. When the man, who was wearing a coat, came within meters of the IDF position despite warning shots, the soldiers shot him.

Later on Thursday, shots were fired at an IDF post near Neveh Dekalim. There were no casualties.

In pre-dawn raids in the West Bank, security forces arrested 14 fugitives.

Also on Thursday night, a mortar shell landed near a settlement in Gush Katif. It exploded in an open area, causing no damage. (© 1995- 2005, The Jerusalem Post 01/28/05)
