Palestinian Authority National Security advisor Jibril Rajoub over the weekend launched a scathing attack on Mohammed Dahlan, calling him a traitor and an Israeli collaborator.
Paragraph-1 Contains
The unprecedented attack came following reports that Dahlan, the former PA Security Minister, was holding secret talks with Israel and the US about security arrangements in the Gaza Strip after the Israeli withdrawal from the area. The reports have enraged many PA officials, who accuse Dahlan of conspiring with Israel and the US against the PA leadership.
Paragraph-2 Contains
Dahlan has denied the reports, but that has not satisfied his critics in the PA, who continue to talk about a US-Israeli plot to turn him into the de facto ruler of the Gaza Strip. Some have gone as far as comparing Dahlan to Ahmed Chalabi, the leader of the Iraq National Council, who helped the Americans topple Saddam Hussein.
Paragraph-3 Contains
In an interview with the Saudi newspaper Okaz, Rajoub was asked about the dispute between him and Dahlan. "I don´t want to go into this matter," Rajoub told the newspaper. "And it´s not important that I give any answers about Dahlan. I don´t care about him at all because he is a collaborator [with Israel] and everyone knows this."
Paragraph-4 Contains
Rajoub used the Arabic word amil to dub Dahlan as a collaborator. This is the same word Palestinians use to describe those who betray their people by working for the Israeli security services. Amil is translated by a number of dictionaries as agent, traitor, mercenary, and hireling.
Paragraph-5 Contains
Rajoub said there was a conspiracy against him and his supporters, but refused to elaborate. He was apparently referring to the IDF raid on his headquarters in Ramallah in 2002. Rajoub was then the head of the Preventative Security Service in the West Bank, while Dahlan served as his counterpart in the Gaza Strip.
Paragraph-6 Contains
Shortly after the raid, PA Chairman Yasser Arafat fired Rajoub from his position. A few months later Arafat appointed him as his national security advisor, but with no authority.
Paragraph-7 Contains
In recent weeks there have been reports about renewed tensions between Arafat and Rajoub, who now supports US and Israeli demands to unite all PA security forces under one command as part of a reform plan.
Paragraph-8 Contains
After a heated altercation between the two, unidentified gunmen fired warning shots outside Rajoub´s office in Ramallah.
Paragraph-9 Contains
In the interview with the Saudi newspaper, Rajoub also attacked Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, dubbing him a liar. "He lies more than he breathes," he added. "Sharon is deceiving the world. He said that the [withdrawal from the] Gaza Strip would be part of the road map and that there would be a safe passage between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He said this would be resolved in a matter of two to three months. Now he is talking about the year 2005. His plan is a lie and a deception." (© 1995-2004, The Jerusalem Post 05/29/04)
