Opposition Leader and Chairman of Kadima, MK Shaul Mofaz, is demanding that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu give him answers for a set of questions regarding a possible strike against Iran.

Mofaz fired off a letter Sunday to Attorney General and Government Legal Advisor Yehuda Weinstein, demanding that Netanyahu hold the monthly meeting with the Opposition Leader that he is required to hold by law. The meeting, he said, is to deal with the matter of a possible strike against Iran´s nuclear weapons program – which Mofaz opposes strenuously.

"I request clear answers," wrote the former defense minister and chief of staff, "what is the current position of the heads of the defense establishment, what is the risk management equation, what are the Israeli market´s reserves, what is the position of the United States regarding the concrete options and the degree of understandings between us and Washington on the intelligence, diplomatic and economic planes."

Mofaz demanded an "extremely urgent" meeting with added conditions: Its content must be recorded and the minutes distributed to the members of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Secret Services of the Knesset´s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Mofaz has said that a premature attack on Iran "could be disastrous."

"We need to ask ourselves… two questions," he said last month on Channel 2´s Meet the Press. "Will an early attack by Israel change Iran´s strategic situation regarding the nuclear program. My answer is no. And the second question is, will an early strike by Israel, in the current circumstances, in the existing situation in the Middle East, with the gasoline fumes [that are in the air], will an early attack lead to war?".

"My answer is that the probability for this is very high," he said, "and that it will endanger Israel´s ability to take action against Iran in the future, and will threaten Israel´s citizens." (IsraelNationalNews © 2011 08/20/12)
