Two explosions shook the southern city of Eilat on Wednesday night, startling residents but causing no injuries or damage. The explosions are believed to be the result of Grad rockets fired into Israel from Egypt´s Sinai Peninsula.

Rocket fire from Sinai at the Eilat region has become an increasingly common phenomenon in recent years. On June 16, two Grad rockets landed near Mitzpe Ramon and Ovda. Islamic terrorist operatives in Sinai are suspected of being responsible for these rocket attacks and on Wednesday, a statement from the Salafi jihadist terrorist group in Sinai claimed other jihadist groups, which it did not name, were behind past attacks on Sinai´s gas pipeline that delivers gas from Egypt to Israel and Jordan and the rocket fire on Israel in recent years. Egypt had repeatedly denied that rockets had ever been fired from Sinai into Israel.

An Iron Dome anti-rocket battery was recently deployed in Eilat as part of an operational deployment program that includes changing the locations of the batteries from time to time.

Israel´s defense establishment has long been on alert to deal with the dangers posed by the growing terrorist infrastructure in Sinai. There is concern that terrorists in the region will use anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles in their operations.

Against the backdrop of growing concerns over a possible war with Iran, the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality has been identifying underground locations that could be used as shelters during missile attacks.
