Strikes kill three, including two Syrian refugees, Lebanese media
says; scores injured
Shells fired from across the Syrian border have killed three
civilians and injured several others in northern Lebanon, Lebanese
media outlets reported.
One woman was killed early Saturday when a shell hit her home in the
Wadi Khalid area of northeast Lebanon, according to the Daily Star.
The Lebanese official news agency reported that at least 20 shells
exploded in villages in the region starting at 1 am, prompting
residents to flee.
Also according to the report, a rocket-propelled grenade that was
fired towards the area hit a Red Cross vehicle transporting Syrian
refugees to a hospital. Two were killed in the strike, and two others
were injured. Another RPG was later fired towards the region.
At midday on Saturday villagers reported more explosions and said
they heard gunfire close to the border.
Meanwhile, Syrian media outlets reported that army forces have
thwarted an infiltration effort by a terror cell on the outskirts of
the village Al Qusayr, near the Lebanon-Syria border.
Nearly 16 months of deadly violence in Syria have raised fears that
the unrest will spill into Lebanon, which has extensive sectarian and
political ties to its eastern neighbor.
World powers have failed to stop Syria´s violence, which activists
say has killed more than 14,000 people.
Activists said more than 67 were killed on Friday. AP and Reuters
