Anyone at the State Department ever heard of Google?
Apparently not. Otherwise, a member of an Egyptian terrorist
organization wouldn’t have been invited to Washington — and then
given red-carpet treatment.
As Eli Lake reports, Hani Nour Eldin spent last week in talks with
high-ranking State Department officials.
He’s a newly elected member of the post-Mubarak Egyptian parliament —
one of several legislators invited for talks with senior Obama
administration officials.
Problem is, Eldin has another credential on his resume — one that
would have easily been uncovered had someone at Foggy Bottom typed
his name into Google Arabic.
By his own admission he’s a member of Gamaa Islamiya — whose
spiritual leader happens to be Omar Abdel Rahman, the so-
called “blind sheik” behind the first World Trade Center bombing.
Indeed, the State Department officially classifies Gamaa Islamiya as
a terrorist organization — which means that, under US law, Eldin
never should’ve gotten an entry visa.
And it’s not as if he’s merely your ever-day follower: He was
arrested in 1993 on terrorism charges involving a shootout between
Gamaa Islamiya members and Egyptian security officials at a mosque.
(He claims he was wrongly charged.)
But that didn’t stop him from getting a sitdown with Deputy National
Security Adviser Denis McDonough.
And wouldn’t you know it — he used that face-time to press McDonough
to release Rahman into Egyptian custody.
The sheik, recall, is serving a life sentence in federal prison for
his role in the 1993 WTC bombing — which killed six — and for
planning follow-up bombings against other New York landmarks.
He was a close ally of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda — whose
sympathizers would love nothing more than to see him free.
The State Department first said Eldin and his colleagues were invited
by the Wilson Center think tank — which put the onus right back on
State.
Now officials say “we’re looking into it,” but basically admitted
that their screening didn’t pick up his membership in Gamaa Islamiya.
Obviously this was a monumental — not to mention highly
irresponsible — screw-up by Hillary Clinton’s State Department.
But with Muslim Brotherhood and similar dubious types set to enter
the Egyptian government, will such “mistakes” now become standard
operating procedure in the name of diplomacy? (Copyright 2012 NYP
