Man working on Israel-Egypt border killed in terror attack near
fence; IDF troops engage cell, kill several terrorists. Local
communities placed on high alert fearing infiltration
A civilian working on the Israel-Egypt security fence was killed and
two others were injured Monday, in a terror attack on the southern
border. Golani soldiers that were scrambled to the scene engaged the
cell, killing several terrorists.
According to available details, the terrorists opened fire, fired an
RPG rocket and attempted to use roadside bombs against two defense
contractor crews building the new border fence.
The incident took place in the border´s "dune sector," in proximity
to the Philadelphi Route, a narrow 14km road stretching between the
Gaza Strip and Egypt.
The surrounding communities have been placed on high alert, fearing
terrorists may have infiltrated the fence. Security forces are
canvassing the area.
Residents have been instructed to remain inside pending further
military orders.
The IDF further refuted abduction rumors, saying that the cell that
attacked the work-crews failed to abduct any civilians.
A military source said that the IDF had no intelligence indicating an
imminent attack, and that it is highly likely that the attack was
launched from Gaza.
Defense establishment officials told Ynet that the attack was
indicative of the terror groups´ anxiety vis-à-vis the rapid
completion of the new border fence.
The Defense Ministry announced that the victims of Monday´s attack
would be recognized as terror victims.
The Israel-Egypt border project currently employs 1,500 workers.
Sunday saw the IAF target two terror hubs in Gaza Strip, following
Saturday´s rocket fire on south Israel. (Copyright 2012 © Yedioth
