Beirut – Lebanon´s state-run news agency says soldiers killed a Palestinian and wounded another during a confrontation outside a refugee camp in the country´s north.

NNA said Friday´s incident occurred after a crowd of Palestinians surrounded and hurled rocks at soldiers. The soldiers had earlier detained a young man trying to bring a motorcycle into the camp that lies near the northern port city of Tripoli. The Lebanese army is meant to guard the perimeters of the country´s refugee camps, which mostly form impoverished ghettos.

There are still tensions between Palestinian residents of Nahr el- Bared and Lebanese soldiers left over from three months of clashes in 2007 between the army and an al-Qaida-inspired Islamic extremist group. The battles killed 168 soldiers, alongside dozens of militants and Palestinian civilians. (© 2012 The Associated Press 06/15/12)
