More than 100 people demonstrated on Friday afternoon outside the
Binyamin Regional Brigade´s base, near the community of Beit El, amid
concerns over the planned demolition of the Ulpana neighborhood.
Confrontations with soldiers broke out, as the protesters carried
signs denouncing the anticipated demolition and called on the
soldiers not to take part in the eviction of Jews from their homes.
Border Police officers who were present at the scene fired stun
grenades at the protesters in an attempt to keep them away from the
base.
A military source later told Army Radio that “the IDF regrets the
fact that the activists chose to try to drag it into the political
discourse.”
Yesha Council head Danny Dayan told Arutz Sheva on Thursday that the
Ulpana residents are preparing for a struggle to prevent the
demolition of their homes. He spoke after a meeting between dozens of
activists and regional leaders, who sat down with residents of the
Ulpana neighborhood after the Regulation Bill was voted down this
week, to discuss the next stage of the struggle.
“We’re very determined, I believe that we will ultimately be the
winners here,” Dayan said. The residents have not yet decided exactly
what form the struggle will take, he added, “or what kind of physical
confrontation, if there will be one.”
Meanwhile, a senior legal source told Arutz Sheva on Friday that the
planned demolition of homes in the Ulpana neighborhood was the result
of human error.
“There was a series of errors that brought the Supreme Court justices
to decide as they did,” he said. “Many mistakes have been made
throughout the history of the Jewish people. Sometimes there is no
choice but to pay the price.” (IsraelNationalNews © 2012 06/08/12)
