MK Gideon Ezra (Kadima) passed away early Thursday, succumbing to lung cancer at the age of 74.

Ezra had been a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee as well as a special subcommittee that deals with classified information.

Ezra was scheduled to be laid to rest in Kochav Yair, where he lived, a 4 p.m. on Thursday.

He served in the Shin Bet (Israel Security Ageny) for more than 30 years, eventually becoming deputy head of the organization in 1994.

Ezra first joined the Knesset in 1996 as a member of Likud and later became a member of Kadima when Ariel Sharon formed the party in 2005. He served as Environmental Protection Minister in the government of Ehud Olmert.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sent his condolences to the wife and family of Ezra, praising him for "loyally serving Israel his entire life."

The prime minister added that most of Ezra´s great contributions to Israel´s security would remain unknown do to the secrecy of his work as a member of the Shin Bet.

Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz mourned Ezra as a "friend and a brave fighter" who knew how to "stand up for his principles." Former Kadima leader Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak also expressed sorrow at Ezra´s passing.

Ezra´s place in the Knesset was expected to be filled by Druse activist Akram Hasoon. (© 1995-2011, The Jerusalem Post 05/17/12)
