The residents of Rechelim sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanking him for his government´s legalization of the status of their community.

"We, the residents of the community Rechelim, thank you very much for your great assistance to this day, on which the Israeli government recognized the community of Rechelim," they wrote.

"We are conscious of our responsibility in building the Land of Israel in general, and building Rechelim in particular," they continued. "We are pleased and grateful that the Israeli government is behind us."

"It has given us strength and purpose," they added, before signing the letter.

Last month a ministerial team voted to formally legalize the status of settlements Sansana, Rechelim and Bruchin – all built in the 1990´s at the behest of various governments.

Netanyahu had said before the vote, "I intend to legalize them soon... they required approvals, the defense minister´s recommendation, as may be necessary to normalize the status of the settlements of Bruchin, Sansana and Rechelim".

In the case of Sansana, an IDF Civil Administration committee had voted not to authorize the communities’ status despite Defense Minister Ehud Barak´s approval.

In Israel´s democracy, as in most democracies, the military is beholden to civilian authorities – in this case Barak – raising difficult questions about the IDF Civil Administration´s motives in ignoring his decision.

The ministerial team´s decision to extend formal recognition to the three communities effectively overrode the Civil Administration´s decision. (IsraelNationalNews © 2012 05/16/12)
