Army hopes to deploy advanced observation system currently installed
in south, in Jordanian border area too
An advanced observation
system is set to be deployed along the border
with Jordan as defense officials fear growing infiltration attempts.
Officials are concerned that efforts to seal the Egyptian border will
motivate infiltrators to access Israel via Jordan.
The advanced
multi-sensor system allows high-quality observation deep
into Jordanian territory. Defense officials hope the system will help
thwart terror smuggling. The IDF is planning to considerably enhance
the field intelligence collection effort in the Dead Sea region.
The system, which incorporates observation, photography and
radar
capabilities, is currently being deployed in the Egyptian border
area. The Southern Command´s Combat Intelligence Collection Corps
will track the Sinai region.
On the Jordanian border, the
system will enable a reduction in combat
forces deployed in the Jordan Valley. The IDF is aiming to boost
protection of hotels and the Dead Sea Works.
Six months ago, the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps thwarted a
drug smuggling effort via a boat crossing the Dead Sea. Several other
attempts in the area were also foiled.
The system´s deployment
still awaits final approval and budget
allocation and is slated to be implemented next year.
The past
year has seen funds designated to the West bank sector
reallocated to the Egyptian border area in the wake of growing terror
alerts. (Copyright 2012 © Yedioth Internet 05/15/12)
