Knesset Member Talab El-Sana takes advantage of Knesset´s final moments to make speech in Arabic in which he criticized government. MK Eldad: Will propose bill to have Hebrew as only official language

Knesset Member Talab El-Sana (United Arab List-Ta´al) took advantage of the 18th Knesset´s final moments to make a move that may have been perceived as something of a protest against the right wing members of the House.

During the filibuster on the bill on the dissolution of the Knesset, he took to the podium and spoke in Arabic as he criticized the government. MK Arieh Eldad (National Union) who spoke immediately after El-Sana did not remain indifferent and said it was his intention to initiate a bill that would see Hebrew as the only official language in Israel – in contrast to the current situation.

"The best thing the Knesset has ever done in its term is dispersing itself," El-Sana said in Hebrew after speaking in his mother tongue. "It´s a shame that it did so three years too late during which the citizen suffered. The mandate will go back to the people. The people are the citizens, they, if they have suffered need to say so at the ballot box.

"They need to punish those who have abused them for three years which is why we are in favor of moving the elections forward to the earliest possible (date). We have asked that our holidays be taken into consideration but we are not interested in extending this government´s term in office."

It was then Eldad´s turn to take to the podium: "Thank you to MK El- Sana for allowing me to present my first proposal for the next Knesset – Hebrew as the only official language in the State of Israel." He then returned to matters on the agenda, and criticized the government on the backdrop of the High Court´s ruling to continue with the destruction of five buildings in the Ulpana neighborhood in Bet El by July 1.

"I don´t have many complaints towards the High Court as the State was the one that in its own stupidity came there once and again and declared – if it´s on private land it will be removed," the MK stated. According to Eldad: "The only solution is that the State can carry out in the short period of time allocated by the High Court is to legislate a law that states that in cases such as these the land owners will receive compensation and the neighborhood will not be demolished. Only the State rushed and decided to disperse the Knesset." (Copyright 2012 © Yedioth Internet 05/07/12)
