Jews from around the world will participate in a hunger relief
project aimed to benefit disadvantaged children in India, The
Hindustan Times reported.
The Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM), an initiative that is scheduled to
begin in June, will gather around 20 Jewish volunteers who will cook
meals and teach basic levels of English and Mathematics to
underprivileged children.
The Jewish volunteers will also introduce the children to the world
of technology.
Volunteers will subsequently learn about Indian culture and Jewish
history in India.
“The programme plans to cover about 500 children spread across 20
centres. We will promote literacy among these children and it’s a
good thing that the children will be introduced to proper nutrition”
said Dr Trevor Miranda, director of Reach Education Action Program
(REAP), a city-based non-government organization.
Jacob Sztokman, an Israeli who is collaborating with REAP for this
project, is organizing a group of volunteers from his community to
take part in the mission.
Sztokman said he decided to become involved in the initiative after
seeing the plight of the impoverished children, following his visit
to the city last year. (IsraelNationalNews © 2012 05/07/12)
