Coalition Chairman MK Ze´ev Elkin is not happy about the prospect of
early elections, which he says endanger the right wing.
"We said something very simple all along the road," he told Arutz
Sheva. "That the [Likud] party may have an interest in elections, but
for the state elections are not the best thing, and I think that for
the right wing they are not good."
"The current coalition is the most right-wing one that I can see on
the horizon," he added. "I am afraid that the next coalition will be
less nationalist, or that the specific weight of the nationalist
forces within it will be less than what exists in this coalition."
Elkin explained that Yair Lapid´s new party, Yesh Atid, and Kadima
under Mofaz will join the coalition. In this constellation, the more
nationalist elements will have less influence over matters than they
do now.
The Coalition Chairman also said warned that the advantage of the
right wing over the left in the Knesset could be eroded if votes are
wasted on small parties. He recounted that a similar scenario
occurred in 1992, when small nationalist parties failed to pass the
threshold for entering the Knesset and the votes they received were
lost. "The right won in 1992 but the man who became prime minister
was Yitzchak Rabin and what happened afterward, everyone knows. This
scenario must not repeat itself."
"Let the left and the Arabs splinter themselves," he called, "not the
right."
He said that it is very important to make sure that within the Likud,
the MKs chosen are from the more nationalist camp. Out of 30 Likud
MKs in the next Knesset, he said, it is possible to place 20 people
with a nationalist ideology. (IsraelNationalNews © 2012 05/03/12)
