The IDF began constructing a security barrier over a kilometer in
length this week around the northernmost town of Metulla to protect
its inhabitants from potential Hezbollah attacks.
The wall, which will eventually be 5- 7 meters high, is being built
in coordination with the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in southern
Lebanon, which has in turn notified the Lebanese army.
The IDF Spokesman’s Office said in a statement on Monday that the
barrier will serve to reduce tensions and improve security in the
area.
Hezbollah maintains a presence in southern Lebanese villages, and
security forces are concerned that gunmen from the Shi’ite terror
organization could open fire on Metulla.
Located six kilometers from the Lebanese border, Metulla is home to
approximately 1500 Israelis.
The wall’s construction is expected to last weeks, according to
Israel Radio. Reuters contributed to this report. (© 1995-2011, The
