President Obama spoke movingly this week about “never forgetting” the
horrors of the Holocaust. He also reiterated his support for Israel
and vowed to do everything possible to prevent future genocides.
Welcome words, all.
Question is: Will meaningful action ever follow? Alas, his speech
offered little hope.
“We’re going to institutionalize the focus on this issue,” Obama
said. “ ‘Alert channels’ will ensure that information about unfolding
crises . . . quickly reach decision-makers, including me.”
He noted the first meeting of his Atrocities Prevention Board, aimed
at developing “new tools” to expose and address human-rights
violations. The board will prepare “the first-ever National
Intelligence Estimates” on the risk of atrocities. The State
Department will boost “its ability to surge our diplomats and experts
in a crisis.”
Great: Form a committee! Issue a report! Send in the striped-pants
brigade!
That’ll stop the murderers.
Please. As Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel asked: “Have we learned
anything from [the Holocaust]? If so, how is it that [Syria’s Bashar
al-]Assad is still in power? How is it that the No. 1 Holocaust
denier [Iran’s Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad is still a president — he who
threatens to use nuclear weapons to destroy the Jewish state?”
Alas, Obama offered no answers.
Notably, the president did recount the story of Jan Karski, a Polish
Catholic who sent the outside world the first eyewitness account of
the slaughter of Jews at the Treblinka death camp — evidence, Obama
said, that went “all the way to President Roosevelt himself.”
Fact is, though, FDR and his State Department did precious little
once alerted.
Yes, they, too, formed a committee and warned the Nazis they would be
held accountable. And, indeed, they were — after 6 million Jews had
been slaughtered.
The difficult truth for Obama is that real evil sometimes can’t be
stopped without bold action — including, sometimes, military action.
The troubling truth for everyone else is that there’s little sign
Obama is willing to take that action, if need be. (Copyright 2012 NYP
