Yisrael Beytenu Anglos, the division of the Yisrael Beytenu party for
the English-speaking community in Israel, sharply criticized on
Thursday Meretz chairwoman MK Zahava Galon for her slip-up during a
radio interview.
Galon, who was interviewed Wednesday morning on Army Radio, discussed
the influence Diaspora Jews exert in Israel, and expressed
frustration at the possibility of “Jew-boys” (the derogatory word is
Yehudonim in Hebrew) deciding Israel’s fate.
“If 10 mandates [in Knesset] are enough to change how Israel
determines whether to go to war with Iran or not,” Galon
said, “organized groups will come from Brooklyn and get the right to
vote. All the decisions about life and death here, whether to
evacuate the territories, whether to authorize outposts, those
sitting in New York or Brooklyn will decide for us?
“Groups of Jew-boys… Jews, organized in the Diaspora, will decide how
we live here?” Galon continued, quickly correcting her mistake.
In response, Yisrael Beytenu Anglos said, “As Anglos in Israel we are
outraged by Galon’s disgraceful comments. These type of comments
should not pass without strong condemnation and we call for a
complete retraction and full apology, especially when our friends and
relatives in the Diaspora are disparaged in such an ugly manner.
Furthermore, the lack of outrage by Galon’s ideological compatriots
demonstrates the abject hypocrisy of those who constantly try and
stifle the Nationalist Camp’s freedom of expression while ignoring
the incitement amongst their own.”
Before her slip, Galon made reference to Nazi Germany when discussing
Israeli politics and attempts to limit the Supreme Court’s power.
She said, “This is a matter of principle, are we an enlightened
country that builds a wall to protect ourselves from a fired-up mob
or oppressive majority… That is why they allowed judicial overseeing
from the Supreme Court… It is the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day,
we’ve seen the power of an oppressive majority…”
Yisrael Beytenu Anglos said in response that Galon’s “invocation of
the Holocaust for political point-scoring is unacceptable and should
not be part of acceptable discourse. These comments, taken as a
whole, reflect very badly on Galon and her party and should be
remedied immediately.”
Following the incident, Galon told Arutz Sheva that the word had
been “a slip of the tongue, I don’t know how it happened, and I
corrected myself immediately.” She added, “If somebody was hurt, I
apologize. Don’t analyze this or start to give it any hidden
meanings.” (IsraelNationalNews © 2012 04/20/12)
