Likud lawmaker visits disputed Machpelah house, meets evacuated settlers at protest tent

"Jewish settlers in Hebron have a right to live wherever they want," Knesset Member Miri Regev said during a visit to the disputed Machpelah house in the West Bank city on Thursday.

Israeli security forces recently evacuated a group of settlers from the house. The settlers claimed to have purchased the house legally from its Palestinian owner.

Regev, of the ruling Likud party, said Jews have a right to settle in Hebron just as they have a right to live in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem – "when they act legally."

The MK, who was accompanied by leaders of the Jewish community in Hebron and Kiryat Arba Council head Malachi Levinger, urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement the Hebron agreement.

Settlers who set up a protest tent near the Machpelah house presented the lawmaker with documents they claim prove it was purchased legally. They asked Regev to act toward expediting the examination of the documents by the relevant authorities.

"I call on the prime minister to implement (late prime minister Menachem) Begin´s proclamation that Jews will live in Hebron, just like any other place in the Land of Israel," she said. (Copyright 2012 © Yedioth Internet 04/19/12)
