Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, held a "situation
assessment" session with some of the IDF´s top brass Thursday after
rocket fire hit the city of Eilat overnight. Among those
participating in the assessment were the Head of Southern Command,
Maj. Gen. Tal Russo, and the Head of the Military Intelligence
Directorate, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi.
At least one Grad rocket hit Eilat during the night. its remains were
found in an open field and near inhabited residential buildings. No
injuries were reported, but several residents suffer from
psychological trauma.
Security forces continue searching the area for additional rockets.
The missile attack on the southern port city is the third of its kind
in the last two years.
On August 2, 2010, six 122 milimeter rockets were fired from the
Sinai Peninsula at Israeli territory. Three of the rockets hit the
city of Eilat, with one striking infrastructure located in northern
Eilat. No injuries were reported.
Two additional rockets hit the city of Aqaba at the entrance to a
local hotel. One Jordanian civilian was killed and five injured, one
severely. An additional rocket fell into the sea.
On April 22, 2010, three 122 millimeter Grad rockets were fired from
the Sinai Peninsula region towards the cities of Eilat and Aqaba. One
rocket landed in the sea south of Eilat and another in Jordanian
territory in the city of Aqaba. Two days later, scuba divers found an
additional rocket 30 meters into the sea, approximately 70 meters
