Police opened an investigation on Sunday into a mob of Beitar
Jerusalem fans that stormed Malha Mall last week and allegedly
attacked Arab workers while chanting racist songs in the food court
on the second floor.
The incident followed a soccer match at the nearby Teddy Stadium.
According to fan videos posted online and the mall’s closed circuit
TV footage, some 300 fans rioted for approximately 40 minutes before
police and mall security guards were able to contain them,
chanting “Death to Arabs!” and “Muhammed is dead!”
The police were roundly criticized for not making any arrests and for
allowing the rioting to continue for so long. On Sunday, police said
they opened an investigation into the incident, despite the fact that
the Arab workers refused to file a formal complaint against the
rioters.
The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Monday, after Beitar won 2-
1 against Tel Aviv’s Bnei Yehuda.
