Future Mt. Herzl commemoration hall will assign fallen soldiers
personal barcodes; allow Smartphone app to scan them for fallen
soldier´s information
The National Memorial Hall at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem is planning to
take up a new initiative meant to assign each fallen soldier with a
personal barcode, containing their name and photo. The barcode will
open to Smartphone scan applications.
The decision to combine the new technology within the Commemoration
Hall´s database came a few weeks ago after receiving approval from
the Defense Ministry´s Department of Commemoration.
Construction of the new hall will commence later in the year. The
contractor heading the project will receive 23,000 barcodes marking
Israel´s 23,000 fallen soldiers. The barcodes will then be placed on
the actual burial sites.
The program includes an "electronic yahrzeit candle," which will
light itself on the anniversary of each fallen soldier´s death.
The hall will be built at the entrance to Mount Herzl, which serves
as Israel´s national cemetery; and is where the annual State ceremony
honoring the nation´s fallen soldiers and terror victims is held on
Remembrance Day.
"Unfortunately there are many soldiers who don’t have any living
relatives who can come visit their graves on the anniversary of their
death. This new project will commemorate soldiers for generation to
come," said the department. (Copyright 2012 © Yedioth Internet
